Renowned Hindustani classical musician Ustad Rashid Khan, who was fighting cancer, passed away in a Kolkata hospital on Tuesday afternoon, according to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
The chief minister expressed deep sorrow, calling it a significant loss for the nation and a personal loss for her. Ustad Rashid Khan, 55, considered Banerjee like a sister and often referred to her as mother.
Who Was Ustad Rashid Khan?
Rashid Khan, born on July 1, 1968, and passing away on January 9, 2024, was an Indian classical musician specializing in Hindustani music. He followed the Rampur-Sahaswan musical tradition and was the great-grandson of its founder, Inayat Hussain Khan. Rashid Khan was married to Soma Khan. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi once said that Rashid Khan was a guarantee for the future of Indian vocal music.

Recognizing his talent, he received the Padma Shri and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2006. In 2022, the Indian Government honored him with the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in India for his contributions to the field of Art.

Ustad Rashid Khan, a music master, died in a Kolkata hospital during getting treatment for prostate cancer. He was 55 and is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.

Last year, on November 22, Ustad Rashid Khan was admitted to a private hospital in east Kolkata after experiencing bleeding in his brain. Neurosurgeons decided to treat him conservatively, and he was improving. However, staying in the hospital for an extended period led to him catching an infection. Unfortunately, despite efforts, he couldn’t be revived and was put on a ventilator before passing away.
