Nepal’s court has given cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane an eight-year prison sentence for a rape case he was convicted of in December 2023. The Kathmandu District Court found him guilty of raping a 17-year-old girl at a hotel in Kathmandu in August 2022. Initially he was released on bail in January 2023.
Even though he was accused, Lamichhane kept playing cricket, joining tournaments for Nepal while out on bail. His most recent game was against Oman in the T20 Asia Finals in November. However, the recent court ruling means he can no longer continue his cricket career, as he has been given a substantial prison sentence.

Sandeep Lamichhane is a famous cricketer in Nepal, being the first from the country to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Delhi Capitals in 2018. He is a leg-spinner and was also former captain of Nepal cricketing team. He holds records for being the second-fastest bowler to reach 50 ODI wickets and the third-fastest to achieve 50 T20I wickets globally.

Sandeep Lamichhane, the former captain of Nepal’s national cricket team, was found guilty by a court of raping a minor girl of age 17. On October 6, the Nepal Police arrested Lamichhane at Tribhuvan International Airport when he returned from playing in the Caribbean Premier League in Trinidad & Tobago.
The district attorney, in the chargesheet, asked Lamichhane to pay compensation for the alleged physical and mental harm caused to the victim. Following the charges, Lamichhane’s bank account and property were frozen.

Lamichhane is recognized for his leg-spin bowling and is well-known as Nepal’s top cricketer. He played a total of nine matches in his career, 3 in 2018 and 6 in 2019, all for the Delhi Capitals.
