Exploring the OnePlus Open: Specs, Features, and More

OnePlus will launch its first folding smartphone in the world today. OnePlus Open was jointly developed by OnePlus and its parent company OPPO. OPPO has a strong presence in India in the foldable segment thanks to its launch of the OPPO N2 Flip and the N3 Flip earlier this year. However, this is the first book-style folding phone to be launched on global markets by BBK.

OnePlus hinted first at a folding phone during the OnePlus 11 Launch on February 7, earlier this year. Anushka Sharma, an actress, was also reportedly spotted in September with the OnePlus Open while being photographed by paparazzi.

The OnePlus Open is a device that OnePlus developed with its sister company OPPO. In some regions, the OnePlus Open debuts as the OPPO Find N3.

The OnePlus Fold will feature a 7.8-inch OLED screen inside and a 6.31-inch OLED outside. The displays are slightly larger than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5.

The OnePlus Open will be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor with 16GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. Samsung’s foldable phones come with the Snapdragon 8 for Galaxy chipset.

Batteries and cameras

The Open’s back will feature a large, circular camera module with a triple-camera setup consisting of a primary 48MP camera, an ultra-wide angle 48MP camera and a telephoto 64MP lens.

It is also expected to have a 4,805mAh lithium-ion battery that supports 67W rapid charging. It is bigger than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 battery with a 4,400mAh capacity and charges faster than 25W.

Foldables will be the new status symbol.

iPhones are a status symbol in India, even though Android smartphones make up most of the market. iPhones are now more affordable due to various factors, such as discounts during sales, free EMI options, and easier credit access.

The older iPhones and those not Pro variants no longer represent the status symbol of the past. Foldable smartphones are the answer.

In the ultra-premium market, owning a folding device provides differentiation value, as iPhones are widely used,” said Prachir Sing, Senior Analyst at Counterpoint Research.

Alternatives to laptops and tablets

The primary use of foldable phones was to replace laptops or tablets. Foldable phones have a larger screen than traditional smartphones and a more compact design. They can be used for gaming, work or entertainment.

The most common use of foldables for business meetings is as an alternative to laptops or tablets. Foldables are more useful than smartphones in entertainment (video content consumption), gaming, multitasking and entertainment.

By 2025, every third premium smartphone sold in India will be foldable.

In 2023, foldable phones will account for around 13% of the market share of premium phones, that is, phones over Rs 45,000. By 2025, this number will more than double and reach 35%. This means that every third premium smartphone sold in India will be a folding phone by then.
