Shubman Gill Become No. 1 In ICC Rankings

In the latest ICC rankings released on November 8, Wednesday, Shubman Gill has surged to the top spot, making him the No.1 ODI batsman in the world, overtaking Babar Azam, who now stands at No.2. Shubman Gill’s rating stands at 830 points, while Babar Azam has 824 points. Notably, Shubman Gill achieved this ranking in just 41 innings, making him the second-fastest player to reach No.1. MS Dhoni holds the record for being the fastest to reach this milestone in just 38 innings.

Shubman Gill has had an exceptional year in ODI cricket, being the leading run-scorer in ODIs and international cricket in 2023. He is also approaching the remarkable milestone of scoring 2000 runs in a single year, which would make him the first batsman to achieve this feat.

Despite his incredible performance throughout the year, Shubman Gill has not been at his best in the ongoing World Cup. He has managed to score two half-centuries, including a stylish 92 against Sri Lanka, but his World Cup journey began with two missed matches due to dengue.

Sara Tendulkar, the daughter of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, recently shared a post on a social media platform (replace ‘x’ with the specific platform) to congratulate Shubman Gill on achieving the No. 1 ranking in the ICC.

On Wednesday, during the ongoing 2023 ODI World Cup, Mohammed Siraj, the Indian fast bowler, secured the top position in the ICC Men’s ODI Bowlers Rankings. He surpassed Shaheen Afridi, the Pakistani pacer, thanks to his outstanding performance.

The ODI bowler rankings have seen a significant shift from their initial standings at the beginning of the World Cup. Following an exceptional unbeaten run in the 50-over showcase event, four Indian players have now made their way into the top 10 of the rankings.

Keshav Maharaj, the spinner from South Africa, has made a significant move by climbing two spots to secure the second position, emerging as a strong contender to challenge Siraj’s top spot. Australia’s Adam Zampa remains comfortably positioned at third place due to his consistent performances.

However, last week’s No.1 ranked ODI bowler, Shaheen Afridi, has slipped four places and now shares the fifth position with Josh Hazlewood.

Dilshan Madushanka, the leading wicket-taker at the World Cup from Sri Lanka, has witnessed remarkable growth, moving up 31 places to the 45th position in the list of ODI bowlers, while India’s spinner Ravindra Jadeja has secured the 19th spot in the rankings.

How ICC Dedcide NO. 1 Batter In ODI

The International Cricket Council (ICC) determines the ranking of ODI (One Day International) batsmen through a complex points system that takes into account their performances in various ODIs. The ranking system is known as the ICC ODI Player Rankings. Here’s a brief overview of how the ICC decides the No. 1 batsman in ODI cricket:

  1. Performance Metrics: The ICC considers various performance metrics for batsmen in ODIs. These metrics include the number of runs scored, the average number of runs per innings, the strike rate, and the number of centuries and half-centuries scored.
  2. Opponent Strength: The quality of opposition teams also matters. A batsman’s performance against stronger teams is given more weight in the rankings.
  3. Match Situation: The rankings also consider the context of the match in which the runs were scored. Runs scored in high-pressure situations or crucial moments of the game are often valued more.
  4. Recent Performance: Recent performances carry more weight than older ones. The ICC rankings are updated regularly, reflecting a player’s form in the most recent matches.
  5. Bonus Points: Players can earn bonus points for exceptional performances, such as scoring a double century or taking a certain number of catches as a fielder.
  6. Opposition’s Ranking: The ranking of the opponent team matters as well. Performing well against higher-ranked teams can boost a player’s ranking more than doing well against lower-ranked teams.
  7. Points System: The ICC uses a points system to calculate a player’s overall rating. The formula takes into account all of the above factors, and the player’s rating goes up or down based on their performances in each match.
  8. Consistency: Consistency in performance is crucial for maintaining a high ranking. One or two good innings may boost a player’s rating, but sustained high-level performance is needed to maintain or improve their ranking.
  9. Comparison with Other Players: The rankings are comparative, meaning a player’s position is determined in relation to other ODI batsmen. The player with the highest rating is ranked No. 1.

The ICC ODI Player Rankings are updated regularly, typically after each ODI series or tournament. Batsmen can move up or down in the rankings based on their performances in those matches. The player with the highest rating at any given time is considered the No. 1 ODI batsman in the world.
