IPL Auction 2024: Where, What, How Many Everything Explained

Every year, there’s a big event that creates a lot of excitement – the IPL auction. It’s become a tradition that people look forward to, especially because it’s shown live on TV.

Whether it’s a huge auction like the one in 2022 or a smaller one, it always grabs attention. Teams try to get the players they want to improve their squads for the upcoming busy season of the Indian Premier League, and it’s always interesting to watch.

Hey! Don’t get confused by the word ‘mini.’ Even though the IPL 2024 auction isn’t as massive as the mega auction, there are still a lot of good players available. It’s going to be a star-studded event, with many top-quality players up for grabs. So, keeping everything in mind, here’s a quick overview of what to expect from Tuesday’s exciting event.

Mallika Sagar, who recently led the Women’s Premier League auction, will be the one in charge instead of Hugh Edmeades. She is the first woman auctioneer in the 16-year history of the IPL.

Which Players Will Go Under The Hammer?

In a big announcement, there are 333 players signed up for the IPL 2024 auction. Initially, there were a huge 1166 names, but the 10 teams together picked around 300 players, reducing the list by 833 cricketers.

Teams need to fill 77 spots in total. Out of the 333 players, 214 are Indian, and the rest, 116, are from other countries. Breaking it down, 116 are experienced players, and 215 are newer ones. Also, two players come from associate nations.

What is the Overall Purse Available For Each Team?

All 10 teams together have a total of ₹262.95 crore to spend on building their squads. Gujarat Titans have the most money, with ₹38.15 crore in their purse, thanks to letting go of Hardik Pandya. They need to fill eight slots.

Next is Sunrisers Hyderabad with ₹34 crore for six slots, and then Kolkata Knight Riders with ₹32.7 crore to fill 12 slots. Looks like there might be a bidding war already!

Chennai Super Kings have a budget of ₹31.4 crore to spend on players. Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Punjab Kings also have significant amounts, with ₹28.95 crore, ₹23.25 crore, and ₹29.1 crore, respectively.

On the other hand, Mumbai Indians, Lucknow Super Giants, and Rajasthan Royals have slightly less money to work with, having budgets of ₹17.75 crore, ₹13.15 crore, and ₹14.5 crore, respectively, compared to the other teams.

How Is The Format Of IPL Auction 2024?

The process for the IPL auction 2024 is the same as in previous years. The 333 players are grouped into 19 sets based on their skills, including specialist batters, all-rounders, wicketkeepers, fast bowlers, spinners, and uncapped players in all categories.

The highest-priced category is set at ₹2 crore, and 23 players, including India’s Shardul Thakur, Harshal Patel, and Umesh Yadav, fall into this bracket. Another 13 players are listed in the ₹1.5 crore segment, 11 in the ₹75 lakh category, and 43, including 11 Indians, in the ₹50 lakh base price segment.

Oldest and Youngest Player at the IPL 2024 auction

In the list of players for the IPL 2024 auction, 17-year-old Kwena Maphaka from South Africa is the youngest, and at the other end, the oldest player is 38-year-old Mohammad Nabi from Afghanistan.

How Many Stars are Going To Miss the IPL Auction 2024?

Some well-known players won’t be part of the IPL auction 2024 for various reasons. England Test captain Ben Stokes, released by Chennai Super Kings, won’t be there due to a knee surgery.

His teammate Jofra Archer is also skipping the auction because of an elbow injury. Another English player, former captain Joe Root, won’t be featuring in the auction after being released by Rajasthan Royals.

Additionally, Bangladesh all-rounder and captain Shakib Al Hasan won’t be part of the auction after being released by Kolkata Knight Riders. He has decided to skip the process and focus on his international career.

Another player not in the auction is Kedar Jadhav, who was released by Royal Challengers Bangalore. Despite being bought for ₹1 crore by RCB last year as an injury replacement for David Willey, the 38-year-old Jadhav played only two matches.

How Many And Which Players Could Trigger a Bidding War?

There are 4 players to watchout in IPL 2024 auction and all eyes will be on Australian pacer Mitchell Starc during the IPL auction, as five franchises have reportedly shown interest in him. Starc is making a return to the IPL auction after playing in only two seasons back in 2014 and 2015.

Fellow Australian pacers Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins are also expected to be in demand, although there might be concerns about Hazlewood’s fitness. Another player to watch is New Zealand youngster Rachin Ravindra, who impressed with his all-round performance in the 2023 World Cup.

Is Trading Window Closed Or Teams Have Still Chance?

Guess what? It’s not done yet! The trade window is reopening on December 20. According to IPL rules, the trading window starts one month after a season ends and stays open until a week before the auction.

After that, it smoothly continues, closing one month before the next IPL season starts. So, the window is opening again the day after the auction and will close a month before IPL 2024 begins.
