Indore has been named the cleanest city in India for the seventh times in a row in the Swachh Survekshan awards. but this time Surat city from Gujrat joined Indore as a joint winner for the first time, while Navi Mumbai secured the third position in the cleanliness rankings.
Maharashtra secured the title of the cleanest state, with Madhya Pradesh closely behind the Maharashtra. The city of Chandigarh received award for achieving the
highest safety standards for sanitation workers. Whereas Varanasi, known for its sacred connection to the Ganga, was acknowledged as the cleanest among cities with such religious significance.
President Droupadi Murmu led the awards ceremony in Delhi, where representatives from the winning cities and states were honored.

The Swachh Survekshan Awards started in 2016 as a part of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban. In the 2023 edition, they looked at 4,416 urban areas, 61 cantonments, and 88 towns along the Ganga. The evaluation process included 1.58 crore online citizen feedback and 19.82 lakh face-to-face interactions, showing how many people were involved in the assessment.
